Militants Kill 12 in Eastern Congo as Violence Escalates

Militants Allied with Islamic State Kill at Least 12 in Eastern Congo

In a disturbing development, militants linked to the Islamic State group have launched attacks in several villages in North Kivu province, eastern Congo, resulting in the death of at least 12 people. The attack, which took place on Saturday in the village of Mukonia, was confirmed by Nicole Kikuku, the municipality’s mayor, who spoke to national television.

According to reports, several villagers are still missing, and the death toll could be higher. This brutal attack is not an isolated incident, as attacks from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have increased in recent times. Last June, the group killed at least 40 people in several villages in North Kivu, and it is also suspected of being behind a massacre last year that resulted in the deaths of 41 people, mostly students, in neighboring Uganda.

The violence in eastern Congo is a long-standing issue, with more than 120 groups vying for power, land, and valuable mineral resources. This has led to the displacement of nearly 7 million people, with many beyond the reach of aid.

In an effort to address the situation, the Ugandan army launched joint air and artillery strikes against the ADF in eastern Congo in 2021. The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo, which has been working to combat rebels for over two decades, will complete its withdrawal by the end of 2024. The three-phased withdrawal has already begun in South Kivu province. The government has also asked an East African regional force, deployed last year to help end the fighting, to leave the country.

This conflict is a stark reminder of the complexity and devastation of armed violence, which continues to affect millions of people worldwide. As the international community works to address this crisis, it is crucial that those responsible for these atrocities are held accountable and that efforts are made to provide support and aid to those affected.
