Finnish Government Pledges to Conclude Proceedings Against Nigeria’s Simon Ekpa

Nigeria and Finland have announced a commitment to resolving a delicate issue concerning the Finnish resident linked to insecurity in Nigeria, Simon Ekpa. During a meeting between Finland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonen, and Nigeria’s Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the governments pledged to continue working together to address the situation.

According to Valtonen, the Finnish government assures Nigeria that legal proceedings against Ekpa will conclude soon. Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, is believed to be the leader of the group of unknown gunmen suspected of spreading violence in Nigeria’s South-East region.

During the meeting, Tuggar confirmed that Ekpa’s case was a central topic in discussions with Valtonen, citing Nigeria’s strong objections to Ekpa’s involvement in the unrest. Valtonen echoed this stance, stating that the issue is not a political one but a judicial matter, underlining their commitment to upholding the law.

Valtonen emphasized Finland’s willingness to cooperate with Nigeria, saying: “We have discussed this with the Nigerian authorities, and we are both committed to finding a solution as soon as possible.” Nigeria’s Attorney-General has reportedly called for Ekpa’s repatriation and prosecution in Nigeria for his alleged actions, although the Finnish government is handling the legal proceedings through their judicial system, governed by strict rules of law.

It is unclear when or if Ekpa will be handed over to Nigeria for prosecution. Despite the uncertainty, the recent meeting signifies a significant development in the ongoing saga. Nigeria and Finland will continue to navigate this diplomatic puzzle to achieve a resolution beneficial to all parties involved.
