Kenya Airport Strike Postponed: Government and Union Engage in Talks Over Airport Development

Nairobi, Kenya – In a crucial development, the Kenya Workers Aviation Union (KAWU) has postponed a highly anticipated strike scheduled to start on Monday, citing an opportunity for talks with the government over the proposed development of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Representing thousands of airport workers, the KAWU is skeptical about a $2.2 billion agreement signed with India’s Adani Airport Holding, which aims to upgrade Kenya’s major African hub. They fear the project will lead to massive job losses and the influx of non-Kenyan workers.

The air transport sector in East Africa stands to experience significant disruptions if the 7.5 million passenger airport reaches maximum capacity, as envisioned by Kenya’s Airports Authority (KAA). According to plans, the partnership with Adani Airport Holding entails the construction of a new runway and the upgrading of the terminal.
