Benue APC Caretaker Committee Summoned by Party Leadership over Local Government Structure

The National Working Committee (NWC) of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern warning to the seven-member caretaker committee of the Benue State APC, cautioning them against contravening their terms of reference.

The party summoned the caretaker committee members to an emergency meeting after they attempted to dissolve the local government structure of the APC in Benue State. According to reports, the move was made following complaints from Benue State that the committee had dissolved some local government party executives.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Hajia Zainab Ibrahim, the Deputy National Women Leader of the APC, explained that the party leadership summoned the caretaker committee members to read out their terms of reference. According to her, the terms of reference for the caretaker committee are to administer the party in Benue State for six months and to conduct elections for the forthcoming local government polls.

The committee’s mandate also includes constituting the logistics for conducting elections from the local government to the ward level. However, the NWC has made it clear that the committee has no business dissolving any committee, as their terms of reference have been clearly stated.

The meeting comes as the APC is embroiled in controversy over various issues, including leadership tussles and allegations of mismanagement. With the caretaker committee’s action sparking concerns over the party’s direction, the NWC’s warning to the committee serves as a reminder of the need for compliance with party decisions.

As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: the APC needs to prioritize unity and stability in the face of growing criticism and internal challenges. The caretaker committee’s actions must be guided by the party’s policies and goals, and the NWC must ensure that the party remains a force for democracy and progress in Nigeria.
