Omah Lay Accuses Colleagues of Copying His Afrobeats Style

Omah Lay Accuses Fellow Afrobeats Artists of Copying His Style

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Omah Lay has sparked a controversy in the music industry by claiming that many of his colleagues from Nigeria and beyond are copying his unique style. In an interview with Billboard, the singer, best known for his hit single “Soso,” stated that he has started a new sound of Afrobeats, which his peers are now mimicking.

“I started a new sound of Afrobeats, and many of my colleagues are taking a bit of my stuff,” Omah Lay said. “Everybody’s tryna copy something.”

The 24-year-old artist did not hold back his criticisms, taking aim at some of the most popular Afrobeats stars, whom he accused of watering down the genre to appeal to foreign audiences and make a profit.

“I don’t think I am happy with what the pioneers of Afrobeats are doing right now,” he lamented. “The front guys are watering it down by just chasing the bags. I can’t remember the last time I heard a proper Afrobeats Song. It’s now Amapiano in Afrobeats clubs, not a proper Afrobeats song.”

Omah Lay’s comments come as a surprise, given the close-knit nature of the Afrobeats community. The genre, which originated in West Africa, has gained immense popularity worldwide, with artists from Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa dominating the charts.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: Omah Lay’s bold claims have sent shockwaves through the industry, with many waiting to see how his fellow artists will respond. Will this spark a re-evaluation of the Afrobeats landscape, or will Omah Lay’s critics dismiss his claims as sour grapes? Only time will tell.
