China and Africa Unite Against Rising Hegemonism and Cold War Mentality

At a press conference on Tuesday, Liu Yuxi, China’s special envoy for African affairs, emphasized the importance of China and Africa working together to protect the interests of developing nations against the rising tide of hegemonism and cold war mentality. The collaboration aims to enhance cooperation in global governance, security, trade, and investment over the next three years through the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit.

Liu highlighted that China and Africa complement each other well in terms of development strengths. Africa’s abundant natural resources and rapid urbanization provide a conducive environment for investment, while China’s capital, technology, and developmental experience create opportunities for mutual growth.

The FOCAC summit, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping from September 1st to 6th, has already kicked off with African leaders arriving in Beijing. China, Africa’s largest trading partner and key source of investment, plays a vital role in Xi’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative.

China’s envoy emphasized that their cooperation exemplifies multilateralism and is not "exclusive." The continent’s rapidly growing population, abundant natural resources, and significant voting power in the United Nations make it essential for global powers to consider Africa’s perspective and support its peace and development.

Liu urged the international community to recognize Africa’s rising importance and not use it as a battleground for their own interests. "Africa should no longer be a battleground for major powers," he stated. Instead, the continent should be empowered to drive its own growth and development.

The close collaboration between China and Africa is expected to yield numerous benefits, including enhanced cooperation in global governance, strengthened security ties, and increased trade and investment. The partnership is set to boost economic growth, promote mutual understanding, and foster peace and stability in the region.

As the world faces a new era of rivalries and great power tensions, the alliance between China and Africa serves as a beacon of hope for peaceful and cooperative coexistence.
