Nigerian Music Mogul DJ Neptune Clears Up Controversy Over Unpaid Royalties
In a recent episode of the popular podcast “Zero Conditions,” renowned Nigerian disc jockey DJ Neptune clarified the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged unpaid royalties for the collaboration track “Nobody Icons’ Remix” with reality star Laycon.
For the uninitiated, Laycon recently took to social media to express his frustration over the lack of payment from DJ Neptune since the song’s release four years ago. DJ Neptune has now set the record straight, assuring listeners that no one has been shortchanged.
“Let me just establish here that nobody ate anybody’s money,” DJ Neptune emphasized. “In the music business, when you have a deal with a distro company or a label, you receive advanced marketing money to promote the music. This has to be recouped as a return on investment. That’s where we are with ‘Nobody Icons’ Remix.'”
According to DJ Neptune, Laycon is seeking documentation regarding the song’s profits. Acknowledging the reality star’s concerns, DJ Neptune explained that Laycon did reach out to him and was referred to his legal team. DJ Neptune emphasized that he, as a creative, does not possess the expertise to handle the financial aspects of the business and has delegated the responsibility to his lawyers.
“We’ve been having a conversation [between our lawyers]. Maybe my own fault is not going back to check on what was happening, but a certain percentage was proposed to Laycon’s team, and they responded. The conversation has simply been ongoing.”
DJ Neptune took the opportunity to rebuke Laycon’s handling of the situation, asserting that his colleague’s public statement gave the impression of defrauding him. Despite the controversy, the DJ reaffirmed his regard for Laycon, highlighting their professional and personal connection.
“Laycon is my brother regardless,” he concluded.
This development is sure to shed light on the situation and provide much-needed clarity for fans of the Nigerian music scene.
