President Tinubu Denies Ordering CBN Governor’s Resignation

In a recent tweet, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has debunked reports suggesting that the President ordered the resignation of Yemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Onanuga described the report as a "bundle of lies," stating that President Tinubu has not asked Cardoso to resign.

According to Onanuga, the report claiming that President Tinubu issued the directive to Cardoso before departing for China is false. The presidential spokesman took to his official X handle on Tuesday to address the rumors, saying, "It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign."

Yemi Cardoso has been facing criticism for his inability to address the ongoing economic challenges and stabilize the Naira. Despite this, he was nominated by President Tinubu on September 15, 2023, and assumed office as CBN Governor on September 22, 2023. Cardoso and his deputies were cleared by the National Assembly days before he took over from acting CBN Governor, Folashodun Shonubi.

The controversy surrounding Cardoso’s tenure as CBN Governor has been ongoing, with many questioning his ability to effectively manage the country’s economy. However, President Tinubu’s denial of ordering Cardoso’s resignation has put an end to the rumors, at least for now.
