Former Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello, Visits EFCC HQ, Leaves Unquestioned

In a surprising development, Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, has left the headquarters of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) without being interrogated on allegations of financial fraud.

According to a statement released by Ohiare Michael, the Director in Bello’s Media Office, the former governor was summoned to the EFCC HQ on Wednesday morning, and he honored the invitation after consulting with his family, legal team, and political allies.

"It is not clear what this means at this point," Michael said, adding that Bello was accompanied to the EFCC office by Governor Usman Ododo.

Earlier reports had stated that Bello decided to honor the EFCC invitation after careful consideration, as he only sought to enforce his fundamental rights to ensure due process. The director revealed that the case has been pending before a competent court of jurisdiction, with Bello’s legal team representing him at every hearing.

Despite the allegations, Bello has nothing to hide or fear, according to Michael. The former governor is committed to supporting the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in placing Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic development, and he is a strong advocate for the fight against corruption.

Notably, Bello was the first Governor of Kogi State to establish an anti-corruption mechanism to prevent graft and ensure that state resources benefit the people. Michael expressed hope that the EFCC would act professionally and respect Bello’s fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This visit has left many wondering about the fate of the investigation, as the EFCC’s motives for not interrogating the former governor remain unclear.
