Roadblocks and Electoral Chaos in Nigeria: Security Forces Halt Voting Exercise
In a move deemed controversial by many, the Nigeria Army has mounted a roadblock on the Agbor-Igueben-Uromi expressway, leaving several passengers stranded along the route. According to reports, the roadblock was set up at Ebudin-Eguare junction, with soldiers denying vehicles access to the road and asking passengers to disembark.
The roadblock caused significant delays, even for journalists who were reportedly delayed for several minutes before being allowed to pass through. Interestingly, some prominent political figures who traversed the road the previous night were detained for several minutes before being granted passage.
Voting has commenced in many areas, including Igueben Local Government Area. At Utantan Primary School, a massive turnout was observed, with citizens casting their ballots in a fervent atmosphere. In similar fashion, heavy security was present along the expressway, with roadblocks installed at Ehie-Igueben and Oghu Primary School in Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area.
The polling unit for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo’s constituency, located in Okaigben community in Ewohimi, also witnessed a significant turnout, with Army personnel making their presence felt in the area.
The decision by the Nigeria Army to impose this roadblock has sparked confusion and concern among citizens, especially in the midst of elections. As the democratic exercise continues, many are urging authorities to ensure a seamless and secure voting process that respects the rights of citizens.
