Breaking News: Africa Film Society Unveils State-of-the-Art Film Library, Theatre, and Exhibition Space in Ghana

Accra, Ghana – September 24, 2024 – In a significant milestone for the African film industry, the Africa Film Society (AFS) has launched its new Library, Theatre, and Exhibition Space in East Legon, Ghana. The facility, founded by renowned Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule, marks the organization’s 8th year of promoting and preserving Africa’s rich cinematic legacy.

The Library, Theatre, and Exhibition Space, which was celebrated with an exclusive launch event, is a comprehensive hub for film enthusiasts, filmmakers, and cinema lovers. The library boasts a curated collection of books, films, and vinyl soundtracks, offering a unique resource for professionals and enthusiasts alike.

The 50-seat Arthouse Theatre, an extension of the organization’s popular ‘Classics In the Park’ program, will showcase classic and contemporary films to its members and diverse audiences. The program, which offers free outdoor cinema to communities, focuses on early African films from 1950 to 1980. AFS aims to acquire, restore, and redistribute these films from their original reels to introduce them to a new generation.

The launch event, attended by industry legends such as Kwaw Ansah, King Ampaw, David Dontoh, Fred Amugi, and Akofa Edjeani, marked a significant milestone for the organization. "We are thrilled to bring this initiative to life and provide a platform for filmmakers to tell African stories," said Blitz Bazawule, founder of Africa Film Society.

The AFS Library, Theatre, and Exhibition Space is set to become a hub for African filmmaking, empowering, educating, and encouraging the art of storytelling. The initiative is part of the organization’s commitment to preserving and promoting Africa’s cinematic legacy, as well as nurturing new filmmakers and audiences for their work.
