Cholera Outbreak Claims 10 Lives in Nigeria’s Ebonyi State

A devastating cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of at least 10 people in Ndibokote village, Ezza Inyimagu, in Nigeria’s Ebonyi State. The outbreak, which began on Monday, has also left a 9-month-old baby orphaned after its nursing mother succumbed to the disease.

According to Dr. Moses Ekuma, the Commissioner for Health, the situation is dire, with about 20 affected persons receiving treatment. The Commissioner confirmed the deaths and disclosed that the Ebonyi State government is working tirelessly to mitigate and control the outbreak.

In a rapid response at Iziogo Health Centre on Wednesday, Dr. Ekuma outlined the efforts being made by the government to address the crisis. He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for approving funds for the procurement of medical supplies to combat the outbreak.

To contain the spread of the disease, the Commissioner advised residents to take precautionary measures and seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting. Three treatment centres have been established in the area, including Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission, Onuenyim, and Ndibokote villages.

Dr. Ekuma also commended development partners such as the World Health Organisation and UNICEF for their support in the emergency response. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of swift action to prevent further loss of life in the area.

The people of Ndibokote village are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the further spread of the disease.
