US Warns Israel: Don’t Attack Beirut Airport or Roads

As violence escalates between Israel and Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, the United States is urging restraint and warning of dire consequences if Beirut’s airport and surrounding roads are attacked. The Israeli military has launched a series of intense strikes against Hezbollah’s strongholds in the capital’s southern suburbs, amid growing tensions.

“We think it’s very important that not only the airport be open, but that the roads to the airport be open, so that American citizens who want to leave can get out, but also citizens of other countries,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters. Since the conflict began, the US has been chartering near-daily flights to evacuate its citizens and their families from the country, with around 900 people taking advantage of the opportunity so far.

The United States is also reserving seats on commercial flights still operating, with 8,500 Americans having reached out to the State Department to inquire about departure conditions. However, Miller noted that not all of those interested in leaving are likely to do so, emphasizing the US’s commitment to helping citizens who wish to depart safely.

Despite escalating violence, the US continues to back Israel’s military operations, with Miller acknowledging concerns over the long-term impact of Israel’s military actions. “We are very cognizant of the many times in the past where Israel has gone in on what looked like limited operations and has stayed for months or for years,” he said. “And ultimately, that’s not the outcome that we want to see.”

Israel’s military campaign, which began in response to a Hamas attack on October 7, has expanded in recent weeks to target Hezbollah in Lebanon. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with the United States calling for restraint and a focus on minimizing civilian casualties.
