Starlink Flouts Rules, Increases Data Tariffs Without NCC Approval

Nigerian Communications Commission Takes Aim at Starlink Over Unapproved Data Tariff Hike

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the telecommunications industry, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has accused Starlink, a satellite internet service provider, of increasing its data tariffs without obtaining the necessary approval. According to Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Starlink’s actions contravene sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, as well as its licence conditions.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, Muoka stated that Starlink’s decision to unilaterally review its subscription packages upwards did not receive the approval of the NCC. "We were surprised that the company jumped the gun by announcing price changes after filing a request to the Commission seeking approval for price adjustment for which the Commission was yet to communicate a decision," Muoka said.

The NCC has expressed its disappointment and frustration at Starlink’s actions, which it believes are capable of eroding the regulatory stability of the telecommunications industry. As a result, the Commission has announced plans to take appropriate enforcement measures against the company.

The controversy surrounding Starlink’s data tariff hike has sparked concerns among consumers and industry stakeholders alike. The move is seen as a breach of trust and a potential threat to the integrity of the telecommunications sector in Nigeria.

The NCC’s decision to take action against Starlink sends a strong message to other companies operating in the industry: comply with regulatory guidelines and seek approval before making significant changes to their services. As the telecommunications landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial that companies prioritize transparency and accountability to maintain the trust of their customers and the public.

The outcome of the NCC’s investigation into Starlink’s data tariff hike remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Commission is committed to protecting the interests of consumers and upholding the integrity of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.
