Nigeria Customs Service Emphasizes Youth Involvement in Tackling Climate Change

In a bid to address the pressing issue of climate change, Nigeria’s Customs Service has underscored the importance of youth involvement in tackling the problem, highlighting that it is a global challenge that requires collective action. Speaking at a three-day retreat, Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu of the Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘B’ in Kaduna presented a paper on the NCS’s role in climate change mitigation, stressing that climate change is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention.

The retreat, themed “Youth Involvement in Tackling Climate Change in Our Community,” was jointly organized by the Red Cross Kaduna North Division and the Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit Zone B Kaduna, from October 6 to 9, 2024, as part of the unit’s Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative. The event aimed to promote environmental sustainability, collaborative efforts, and innovative approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Comptroller Shuaibu emphasized the importance of collective action, stating that the NCS is committed to supporting Nigeria’s climate change mitigation strategies, citing the need for concrete actions to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainable practices. He highlighted the retreat’s focus on discussing sustainable agricultural practices, renewable energy solutions, and eco-friendly policies, urging young people to become climate champions.

The three-day retreat concluded with organizers and participants planting trees, demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation. Comptroller Shuaibu concluded by reiterating the NCS’s dedication to contributing to Nigeria’s climate change mitigation efforts, saying that the initiative marks a significant step forward in addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change and promoting environmental stewardship and community engagement.
