Tinubu Continues Vacation, Can Travel Wherever He Likes, Adviser Says
President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria is still on his two-week leave, and as such, he is free to travel wherever he pleases, according to Bayo Onanuga, his special adviser on Information and Strategy.
Tinubu, who has been on vacation in the United Kingdom since October 2, is not restricted to a specific location, Onanuga stressed. The president’s administration had initially disclosed that Tinubu would use his leave to reflect on his administration’s economic reforms and work on new strategies.
However, a recent post by Senior Special Assistant to the President on political and other matters, Ibrahim Masari, has raised eyebrows, as he disclosed that the president would be departing the United Kingdom for Paris, France, to attend an “important engagement.”
The post has drawn criticism from many Nigerians, who see the president’s continued travels as a waste of taxpayers’ money, given the country’s current economic challenges. Onanuga, however, dismissed the criticism, stating that the president’s private time is his own, and that he can travel wherever he chooses.
“As President Tinubu is on leave for two weeks, he is not restricted to the UK. It is his private time. He can go to anywhere he so desires. He is still observing his leave,” Onanuga wrote on his social media handle.
The development has sparked debate on social media, with some Nigerians calling for transparency on the president’s itinerary and others defending his right to personal time. As the president continues to observe his leave, only time will tell what his next move will be.
