Edo State Government Launches ‘Catch Them Young’ Campaign to Combat Drug Abuse among Youths

The Edo State Government has taken a bold step to combat the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people, launching a comprehensive sensitisation campaign to educate schoolchildren and key stakeholders on the dangers of substance abuse.

Media Talk Africa reports that the state government has noted that drug-related issues account for the majority of young people requiring rehabilitation in the state. To combat this trend, the Permanent Secretary of Social Development and Gender, Mrs Barbara Osobajo, flagged off the programme in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.

The “Catch Them Young” initiative is aimed at educating schoolchildren and stakeholders on the dangers of substance abuse, underscoring the urgency of the issue and the importance of awareness. Osobajo stressed that the future is under threat due to the alarming rate of drug abuse among young people and emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent this menace from destroying our youth.

Marvelous, the Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, commended the state government’s efforts and emphasized the critical need for community engagement. He highlighted the multifaceted approach required to address drug abuse, involving parents, educational institutions, and community organisations.

Purpose Ehigie, the facilitator, shed light on the alarming dangers of substance abuse, highlighting the risks associated with prescription medications, alcohol, and other seemingly harmless substances. He advocated for early education and intervention as key to empowering children and adolescents to develop healthy habits and coping mechanisms.

As the government and stakeholders join forces to combat this scourge, it is clear that a united front is needed to ensure youth receive the necessary guidance and support. By “catching them young,” the Edo State Government is sending a strong message that the future is worth fighting for, and it’s time to act now to protect it.
