Indian Fashion Icon Rohit Bal Passes Away at 63

Renowned Indian fashion designer Rohit Bal, celebrated for his distinct fusion of traditional artistry with contemporary flair, has passed away at the age of 63. The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) confirmed his death on Friday, noting his influential role in shaping modern Indian fashion.

Known for his intricate designs and bold patterns, Bal brought to life elements of India’s rich cultural heritage. The FDCI honored his contributions in a heartfelt Instagram post: “We mourn the passing of legendary designer Rohit Bal. Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion, inspiring generations.”

Bal, affectionately called “Gudda” by close associates, graduated from St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi with a history degree. After initially working in his family’s export business, he launched his label in 1990, quickly establishing himself as a pioneering designer on the global stage. His collections drew from diverse influences, blending local craft traditions with the evolving urban landscape, earning him admiration both in India and abroad.

FDCI Chairman Sunil Sethi remarked on Bal’s unique vision: “His attention to detail and his signature lotus motifs brought modern shapes to life, resonating deeply with modern women. His passing leaves an indelible void in the fashion industry.”

Bal’s legacy will continue to inspire and shape the future of Indian fashion, marking him as a true icon in the industry. He is survived by a wealth of work that remains celebrated worldwide.
