Bobrisky Leaves Nigeria, Cites Need for “Sanity and Health” After EFCC Release

Nigerian crossdresser and social media personality Bobrisky has announced his temporary departure from Nigeria, citing the need to protect his mental health and well-being. His announcement follows his recent release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement shared on his Instagram page on Monday, Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, explained that pressures from certain Nigerian security agencies pushed him to seek refuge abroad. “Yes, I’m here to confirm I’m out of Nigeria temporarily. I need to attend to my sanity and my health,” he stated.

He went on to allege that some security agencies in Nigeria had attempted to “frustrate” him, though he expressed gratitude for his faith. “Few Nigerian security agencies tried everything to frustrate me, but naaa, I gat God,” he wrote.

Bobrisky revealed that his departure was not without challenges. He reportedly had to purchase a business class ticket three times before he was able to board successfully, a series of events he described as both exhausting and costly. “Each business class ticket cost me 9,800,000 naira. I only successfully flew yesterday, 3/11/2024,” he shared, adding that he hoped to receive refunds for the two unused tickets from the airline, KLM.

Bobrisky’s departure comes amid rising scrutiny from Nigerian authorities and signals what he views as a necessary pause for his peace of mind, following a period of legal and social challenges in his home country.
