Asake On His First Grammy Nomination, His Transformation, And More

Musician Asake finally addressed his bold new look and face tattoos while celebrating his debut Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance with his hit song “Amapiano” at the 67th Grammy Awards.

The 30-year-old, known for hit songs like ‘Joha’,’ Lonely At The Top’, ‘Amapiano’, ‘Organise’, and ‘Sungba’, spoke with Billboard on the 67th Grammy Awards red carpet about his transformation and the significance of his nomination. “I love to feel comfortable with myself,” he said, reflecting on his recent changes, including a bold new hairstyle and striking tattoos.

When asked about his new look, Asake shared, “This is how I feel now. I love to do the things that I feel like. It is good for me, not even about anybody. This is how I feel now. I might wake up tomorrow and you guys might not see any tattoo in my face.”

Asake also revealed that his outfit for the night was a custom design by his friend PDF, who helped him create a unique military-inspired look. “I’m wearing a custom design from PDF, my good friend, so we designed this together because I’m in my military time,” he explained.

The Best African Music Performance category was highly competitive, with Asake’s compatriot Tems winning the award for her song “Love Me Jeje.” Other nominees in the category included Burna Boy for “Last Dance,” Femi Kuti for “Different City,” and Rema for “Calm Down.”

Reflecting on his nomination, Asake expressed his gratitude, saying, “I feel blessed. I think about everything and everything that happens to me; I always give thanks to God because I know there are so many people that want it, but for me to be part of the ones that God chose, I feel blessed, you know; I feel happy, and I’m honoured. Thank you, Grammy.”
