Thibaut Courtois explains why he is calm during matches

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has said that he does not shout at defenders during football matches because he does not see it as necessary.

He made this statement after being likened to Manchester United great Edwin van der Sar by former centre-back Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand, who hosted the Belgian goalkeeper on his YouTube channel, compared him to Van der Sar—his former teammate—due to his ‘calming aura’ on the pitch.

“That’s nice to hear. In that way, I’m a calm goalkeeper, you will not see me shout,” Courtois said.

“If you make a mistake, you already know you’ve made a mistake. It’s better to focus on the set piece straight away, organise your people properly, and when the ball comes into your box, say: ‘Hey, don’t do this anymore or try to do this.’ But shouting, waving your arms around—I don’t think it’s necessary.”

Courtois has played for Real Madrid since his £35 million move from Chelsea in 2018.

He has kept 107 clean sheets in 267 games across all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Manchester United great Van der Sar, during his playing days, kept 135 clean sheets in 266 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils after joining from Fulham in 2005.
