Arsenal women lose 2-0 in first leg of Champions League quarter-final

Real Madrid Women have won the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal.

The Spanish side secured a 2-0 victory under soggy conditions at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium.

Heavy rain in Madrid left the pitch in poor condition, hampering Arsenal’s ability to play their usual passing game as they struggled to cope with the slow surface.

Linda Caicedo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with Real Madrid’s first shot of the game, finishing off a counter-attack.

As Arsenal pushed for an equaliser, Real Madrid doubled their advantage.

Goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger was unable to keep out substitute Athenea del Castillo’s effort from the edge of the box.

The second leg will take place next Wednesday at the Emirates.
