A major crackdown on cult activity in Edo State, Nigeria, has resulted in the arrest of 95 suspected cultists and the recovery of arms and ammunition. According to Moses Yamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, the suspects are members of notorious confraternities, including the Maphites, Eiye, and Aye groups. These groups have been linked to a string of cult supremacy killings in the state.
The police operation, which involved sustained intelligence-driven raids on cult enclaves in Benin City and surrounding areas, led to the seizure of two locally made pistols, one single barrel shotgun, and 24 live cartridges. Out of the 95 suspects arrested, 64 have already been charged to court and remanded, while investigations continue on the remaining suspects.
The arrests are a significant step forward in the fight against cultism in Edo State, which has been plagued by violence and intimidation from these groups. Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika is urging parents and guardians to be vigilant and monitor the activities of their children to prevent them from getting involved with cults. Agbonika also issued a stern warning to young people in the state, advising them to steer clear of unlawful societies that can damage their future and put themselves and others at risk.
