Federal High Court Establishes Freedom of Information Desk for Public Access

Federal High Court sets up Fol Desk to enhance journalists’ access to information — Daily Nigerian

In a significant move to enhance transparency and accessibility, the Federal High Court of Nigeria has established a Freedom of Information (FoI) Desk. This development is aimed at facilitating easier access to information for both journalists and the general public. The announcement was made by the court’s Director of Information, Catherine Christopher, who emphasized the court’s commitment to upholding transparency, promoting accountability, and enhancing access to information.

The FoI Desk is designed to serve as a central point for receiving inquiries from the public and journalists, submitting formal requests for information, and providing guidance on accessing public records in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act. Located at the Federal High Court’s Headquarters in Abuja, the desk is staffed by trained personnel who are ready to assist individuals and organizations seeking information about the court’s activities, decisions, and operations.

This initiative is part of the court’s ongoing efforts to foster open communication and support the constitutional right to information. By establishing the FoI Desk, the court aims to ensure compliance with legal and procedural requirements in accessing information. The desk is open during official working hours from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, and individuals can also contact the desk via email or phone for further information.

The Freedom of Information Act, passed in 2011, grants citizens a legally enforceable right to access information held by public institutions, including government ministries, agencies, and bodies performing public functions. The Act aims to promote transparency, accountability, and public participation in government. With the establishment of the FoI Desk, the Federal High Court is taking a significant step towards realizing these goals and strengthening the country’s democratic institutions.

By providing a centralized point for accessing information, the court is demonstrating its commitment to transparency and openness. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s governance and will likely be welcomed by civil society organizations, journalists, and citizens who have been advocating for greater access to information. As the court continues to operationalize the FoI Desk, it is expected that more Nigerians will be able to access the information they need to hold public institutions accountable and participate in the country’s democratic processes.
