Abuja Activist Seeks Academic Records of FCDA Director Amid Discrepancies

A high-stakes court battle is unfolding in Abuja, Nigeria, as activist Njoku Ifeanyichukwu seeks to uncover the truth about a top official’s academic records. The activist has petitioned the Federal High Court to compel the University of Port Harcourt and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to produce the academic records of Odom Anurika Anita, a director at the FCDA. The move is aimed at clearing up discrepancies in Anita’s records and verifying the authenticity of her qualifications.

The court case, marked FHC/ABJ/CD/929/2024, has the FCDA, University of Port Harcourt, and Odom Anurika Anita listed as defendants. The activist’s lawyer, Abiodun Olusanya, has asked the court to invoke the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to obtain Anita’s academic records, which the activist believes will shed light on the discrepancies. However, the FCDA has claimed that Anita is not its employee, prompting the activist to seek the inclusion of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) as a defendant in the case.

In a surprising twist, Anita has countered that the case is an attempt to intimidate her for supporting her step-niece, who was allegedly molested by one Mr. Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Uyaelumuo. According to Anita, the molestation case was widely reported and investigated by the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). She alleges that the rape suspect has launched a smear campaign against her, using false and malicious petitions to embarrass her and distract her family from seeking justice for the victim.

The court has adjourned the matter until June 16 to hear the application to join the FCTA as a defendant. The plaintiff has also asked the court to order the FCDA to produce Anita’s academic records, graduation certificate, and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, which are crucial in verifying her employment credentials. The University of Port Harcourt has been granted permission to file a counter affidavit, which will be deemed properly filed despite being submitted out of time.

As the case progresses, it is clear that the stakes are high, with allegations of intimidation, false petitions, and discrepancies in official records hanging in the balance. The court’s decision will not only affect the parties involved but also have implications for the broader issue of transparency and accountability in public institutions. With the hearing set for June 16, all eyes will be on the Federal High Court as it navigates this complex and intriguing case.
