A surge in violent attacks by armed herdsmen has left Benue State in Nigeria on high alert, with over 20 of its 23 Local Government Areas under siege. The Benue Democratic Ambassadors, a coalition of professionals from diverse backgrounds, has raised the alarm, criticizing the government for its inadequate response to the crisis. According to the group’s National President, Mr. Daniel Pila, the state is effectively under siege, with no part of it safe, including the capital, Makurdi.

The situation has been exacerbated by a recent attack on Aondona, the hometown of the Catholic Bishop of Makurdi Diocese, Most Reverend Wilfred Anagbe. The assault, which claimed numerous lives, occurred just days after Bishop Anagbe spoke before the United States House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, detailing the plight of Christians in Nigeria and the escalating violence in Benue. The Benue Democratic Ambassadors described the attack as especially disturbing, given the Bishop’s recent speech, which has reportedly provoked threats against him.

The group has called on the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate the killings in Benue, particularly the attack on Catholic priest Reverend Father Atongo and the wider assault on the faithful. They have also appealed to all stakeholders to put aside political differences and unite in restoring peace to the state. “Our people have nowhere safe to turn,” the statement said, highlighting the desperate situation faced by the residents of Benue.

In addition to the security concerns, the Benue Democratic Ambassadors have also expressed disappointment with the state government’s developmental efforts, accusing Governor Hyacinth Alia of abandoning all initiated projects. They cited stalled road works, including Ishaya Bakut, Iyorchia Ayu, and Vaatia College roads, and noted that Makurdi has become “painfully dirty.”

However, Governor Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, has dismissed the allegations as baseless, stating that the security situation in Benue has improved. He pointed out that people are now able to conduct their commercial activities without fear, and that the Governor has flagged off several infrastructural projects, including 16 urban road projects in the state capital. Kula also highlighted the improvements in educational facilities, which have motivated teachers and provided a conducive environment for learning.

Despite these claims, the situation in Benue remains dire, with the Benue Democratic Ambassadors urging the government to take immediate action to address the security crisis and restore peace to the state. The international community is also being called upon to take notice of the situation and provide support to the people of Benue, who are facing unimaginable hardship and violence. As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that urgent attention is needed to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Benue State.
