Headline: Trump Vows New Sanctions on Russia Despite Doubts; Envoy to Visit Moscow
In an unexpected turn, U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that he will impose fresh sanctions on Russia, even if they ultimately prove ineffective. This announcement comes despite Trump’s own reservations about the impact of sanctions and a pending 10-day deadline for a peace settlement in the Ukraine conflict.
In a press briefing on Thursday, Trump halved the initial 50-day window for Russia and Ukraine to reach a peace deal, warning that failure to meet the new August 3 deadline would result in sweeping penalties. These penalties could include hefty tariffs and secondary sanctions targeting Russia’s trade partners.
Trump expressed uncertainty about the effectiveness of sanctions, stating, “I don’t know that sanctions bother him,” referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I don’t know if that has any effect, but we’re going to do it.” This sentiment aligns with Putin’s assertion that the existing sanctions, numbering over 10,000, have had limited impact on Russia’s economy.
The U.S. President also announced that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, would travel to Russia following visits to Israel and Gaza. Witkoff, who has met Putin on several occasions in the past, could play a pivotal role in diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis. The U.S. acting envoy to the UN, John Kelley, clarified that Trump anticipates a ceasefire by August 8.
Interestingly, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the threat of new sanctions, stating, “We have been living under a huge number of sanctions for quite a long time… Of course, a certain immunity has already developed.” Peskov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to peace but emphasized that it must be achieved on terms that respect Russia’s interests and “new territorial realities.”
Since the 2014 Western-backed coup in Ukraine and the escalation of the conflict in 2022, Russia has emerged as the most sanctioned country globally, with the majority of these restrictions imposed by the U.S. and EU. Despite these measures, Putin maintains that Russia has adapted economically and remains undeterred.
As the 10-day deadline approaches, international eyes are on Moscow and Washington to see if they can broker a deal and prevent further escalations. The looming sanctions, Trump’s uncertainty about their effectiveness, and Russia’s seemingly immune stance on the issue add layers of complexity to an already volatile situation.
