A Nigerian political analyst and journalist, Comrade Bashiru, has cautioned that the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) risks failure in its bid to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections unless it reconciles with its sole House of Representatives member, Leke Abejide. Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, Bashiru emphasized that sidelining Abejide—who chairs the influential Customs and Exercise Committee in Nigeria’s National Assembly—could trigger internal discord and destabilize the coalition.
“Excluding Hon. Abejide from strategic decisions jeopardizes the ADC’s unity and viability,” Bashiru stated. “Without his involvement, the coalition’s efforts to challenge Tinubu are unsustainable.” His remarks come as the ADC named former Senate President David Mark as its interim chairman, aiming to consolidate opposition forces against the ruling party.
The ADC has garnered support from prominent figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi. Yet the party faces internal resistance, with members like Dumebi Kachikwu—the ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate—rejecting Mark’s appointment. Critics argue the leadership shift overlooks grassroots concerns and risks alienating key factions.
Bashiru urged the coalition to prioritize inclusivity, noting Abejide’s legislative influence and grassroots networks as critical assets. Analysts suggest the ADC’s ability to navigate these tensions will determine its capacity to present a credible challenge in 2027, particularly as Tinubu’s administration faces scrutiny over economic reforms and security challenges.
