Nigeria to Disburse Fresh Cash to 2.2 Million Households in August

Nigeria to Initiate Fresh Cash Transfers to 2.2 Million Households Amid Rising Poverty Concerns

In an effort to tackle poverty and provide economic support to its most vulnerable citizens, the Nigerian government has announced plans to initiate fresh cash transfers to 2.2 million households across the country. This move is part of the nation’s rapid conditional cash transfer program, which aims to offer financial assistance to those in dire need.

Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, revealed the government’s plans during an interview with Channels Television. According to Sununu, the cash transfer scheme is expected to kick off before the end of August 2025, and the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) will be responsible for identifying and selecting the beneficiaries.

The minister explained that the selection process would involve harvesting vulnerable Nigerians based on their lowest cadre in the national social register. This approach is designed to ensure that those who are most in need of financial assistance are prioritized and supported.

To date, the Nigerian government has dispersed N419 billion (approximately $1.1 billion USD) to five million Nigerians under its rapid conditional cash transfer program. This financial assistance has been distributed across the country, with 71 percent going to the northern part and 21 percent to the southern part.

The federal government’s efforts to alleviate poverty and provide economic support to its citizens come as Nigeria grapples with rising poverty concerns. The country’s poverty rate remains high, with an estimated 86 million Nigerians living below the poverty line, according to the World Bank.

The cash transfer program is part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle poverty, promote economic growth, and improve living standards for all Nigerians. While significant challenges lie ahead, the government’s efforts to provide financial support to its most vulnerable citizens are seen as a crucial step towards achieving these objectives.

As the Nigerian government prepares to roll out the fresh cash transfers, many are eagerly waiting to see the positive impact this will have on the lives of those receiving the assistance. With its commitment to addressing poverty and promoting economic growth, the government is working towards a brighter future for all its citizens.
