The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) recently held a public hearing in Umuahia, Abia State, to examine a proposal submitted by Kwale Pipeline Limited for the construction and operation of a major gas pipeline network. The project seeks to link Delta, Imo, Abia, and Akwa Ibom states through several pipeline segments: a 24‑inch, 249 km line from the Kwale Gas Processing Plant in Delta State to the SPFL Gas and Petrochemicals Free Zone in Akwa Ibom State; a 34‑inch, 150 km line from the Uguali facility in Imo State to the same free‑zone; and a 10‑inch, 249 km line also connecting the Kwale plant to the SPFL zone.

The hearing brought together community leaders, security agencies, government officials, and representatives of Kwale Pipeline Limited. Okorugo Aji, Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Lands, emphasized that the initiative would promote economic development in Abia State. Kwale Pipeline’s representatives, Mrs. Nwobodo Oluchi and Mr. Anthony Asuka, assured attendees that local communities would benefit from surveillance contracts, employment opportunities, and compensation in line with Nigerian law.

Eze Ordu, a spokesperson for NMDPRA, highlighted the potential for a gas sub‑station in Ukwa, which could create hundreds of jobs for local youth. Traditional leaders, including Eze Jackson Ibe and Eze Tony Nwagbara, praised Governor Otti’s achievements and called for accelerated development of Ukwa land to exploit its rich petrogas resources.

The proposed gas pipeline project carries significant implications for the region’s economic growth and energy infrastructure. The NMDPRA’s public hearing provides a platform for stakeholders to engage in the decision‑making process and help ensure that the project is implemented responsibly and sustainably. As the project advances, it is expected to generate employment, stimulate local economic activity, and contribute to the development of Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
