Tinubu's ban on foreign goods major boost for Nigerian economy — Stakeholders

Former Southern and Northern legislators have endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, arguing that it is the South’s turn to complete its tenure. The endorsement was announced at the 2025 Southern Summit of Former Legislators in Abeokuta, Ogun State, which was themed “National Unity: Bedrock of Nation Building.” Prominent attendees included President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Olufemi Gbajabiamila, and former Senate President Ken Nnamani.

A communique issued at the close of the summit stated that the endorsement was made in the interest of unity, justice and fairness, emphasizing that President Tinubu’s continued leadership would serve both the South and the nation. The former legislators adopted Tinubu as the sole candidate of the South and called on the region to support the North in 2031 when it assumes its turn to lead the country.

Gbajabiamila, who convened the summit, praised Tinubu’s administration for undertaking difficult reforms, notably the removal of the fuel subsidy, describing it as an act of “extraordinary statesmanship” that will benefit Nigeria’s long‑term stability. He urged Nigerians to be patient, acknowledging that such reforms may cause temporary hardship.

The Northern Caucus of the forum reiterated its commitment to back the South in the next election, citing the need for fairness and equity. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Senator Surajudeen Basiru also voiced support for Tinubu’s completion of two presidential terms, stressing the importance of unity and diversity amid social, political and economic challenges.

The endorsement by former Southern and Northern legislators signals a growing consensus among Nigerian leaders on the need for unity and stability. With the 2027 elections approaching, the impact of this endorsement remains to be seen, but it is clear that President Tinubu’s administration will continue to play a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
