A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, warned critics and opposition figures against making unguarded comments about Nigeria and its leadership. Speaking to journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, he described such actions as unpatriotic, especially when they disparage the country and its leaders in the name of politics.
Oyintiloye expressed concern over the continual humiliation of Nigeria by its own citizens, both at home and abroad, through unsubstantiated allegations and careless utterances. While the constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression, he argued that this right should not be used as a license for uncivil language against the nation and its leadership. He urged that criticisms of government policies and programs be voiced with civility and decorum, emphasizing the need for respect and dignity toward the nation’s leaders.
The APC chieftain pointed out that Nigeria’s global image is suffering because of negative and unverified accusations made by critics and opposition members against the current administration. He acknowledged that the country faces challenges, which the administration is working to address, but stressed that reckless remarks—especially from Nigerians living abroad—damage the country’s reputation and hinder progress. Oyintiloye noted that many residents within Nigeria also engage in similar behavior, which can have far‑reaching consequences.
He emphasized that the way Nigeria and its leadership are portrayed reflects how the nation’s identity is perceived worldwide. “The internet never forgets,” he cautioned, warning that individuals who spread negative remarks may eventually become victims of their own words. Oyintiloye called for a culture of positivity and patriotism, likening it to the American habit of saying “God Bless America” regardless of circumstances.
Finally, he lamented that many Nigerians abroad are facing investigations, harassment, and humiliation as a result of damaging remarks aimed at tarnishing the country’s image. He urged critics and opposition members to look beyond politics and refrain from destroying the nation’s reputation with disparaging words. Confident in Nigeria’s ability to overcome its challenges, Oyintiloye expressed hope that citizens will soon be proud to be called Nigerians anywhere in the world.
