A small public radio station in the United States faces an uncertain future after funding cuts implemented by the Trump administration. Allegheny Mountain Radio, which serves a rural area on the Virginia–West Virginia border, depends heavily on federal support; 60‑65 percent of its budget comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. General manager Scott Smith says the station has enough reserves to survive for at least a year, but it cannot continue operating in the red indefinitely.

The station is a vital source of information for the local community, delivering news, sports, music, and NPR newscasts to the small mountain towns. Because few outside radio signals reach the remote region and the telephone network is unreliable, many residents—especially the elderly—rely on Allegheny Mountain Radio as their primary source of information and emergency alerts. Losing the station would deprive them of crucial updates such as weather warnings and could undermine the social fabric that keeps the community connected.

Despite the challenges, the community has rallied around the station. Over 200 people have donated to help keep it running, and Smith says the outpouring of support has hardened his resolve to find ways to maintain operations. The funding cuts have also sparked broader concerns about other small public radio stations across the United States that rely on federal money to provide essential services. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS, has been a target of conservative criticism for alleged liberal bias, but the cuts raise particular worries for rural areas that depend on public radio as their primary media outlet.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Allegheny Mountain Radio and similarly affected stations will navigate these challenges and continue to serve their communities.
