A prominent chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Buba Galadima, has warned that Nigeria could face civil unrest if the federal government proceeds with an alleged plan to appoint a retired Court of Appeal judge as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Galadima cited widespread rumors that the government is considering the retired judge, whom he described as having a notorious reputation. He argued that such an appointment would undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system and could destabilise the country.
Galadima accused the current administration of disregarding the rule of law and claimed that INEC, under its present leadership, is already compromised in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He alleged that the incumbent INEC chairman has rigged elections for the APC, pointing to the appointment of a party secretary as acting national chairman as evidence. The NNPP chieftain warned that installing the retired judge as INEC chairman could lead to chaos and render future elections meaningless.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and stressed the importance of preventing individuals with questionable records from overseeing the nation’s electoral processes. The alleged plan to appoint the retired judge has sparked concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and its potential impact on national stability. As the Independent National Electoral Commission plays a critical role in ensuring free and fair elections, the choice of its chairman carries significant implications for the credibility of the electoral process.
With future elections on the horizon, the need for a transparent and impartial electoral commission has become increasingly urgent. The federal government’s next steps regarding the alleged appointment will be closely watched, and any decision made is likely to have far‑reaching consequences for Nigeria’s political landscape.
