Ukrainian drones struck a major Russian oil refinery about 1,400 km from the front line on Thursday, igniting a fire. The facility, operated by state‑controlled energy giant Gazprom in the central Bashkortostan region, was the target of the attack, which is part of a recent wave of drone strikes aimed at Russia’s energy infrastructure. Ukraine seeks to disrupt the energy revenue streams that fund Moscow’s military operations.

A source within Ukraine’s SBU security agency said the drones hit a critical part of the refinery, describing it as the “heart” of the facility. Unverified images circulating on Russian social media showed a fire with a large plume of dark smoke rising from the site. While Russia usually does not acknowledge successful Ukrainian strikes, Radiy Khabirov, head of the Bashkortostan region, confirmed the attack. He said two drones were involved, but no fatalities or injuries were reported. Security measures were activated and the drones were neutralised. Khabirov added that an assessment of the damage is underway and efforts are being made to extinguish the fire.

This strike follows a series of attacks over the summer that have significantly reduced Russia’s refining capacity. Consequently, fuel prices have risen nationwide, and petrol shortages have been reported in several regions. In response, the Kremlin has extended a ban on petrol exports to stabilise domestic market prices, and Gazprom Neft has postponed planned maintenance at one of its sites to avoid worsening the shortage.

The international community is also moving to limit Russia’s energy revenue. Plans are under way to impose tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil, a step supported by U.S. President Donald Trump. Ongoing attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure and measures to curb its energy earnings could have substantial implications for the Russian economy and its military operations. As the situation develops, the global community will be closely monitoring its impact on the worldwide energy market.
