The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognizing the David Mark‑led faction of the party, despite a pending court case challenging its legitimacy. In a statement issued after an emergency meeting, the ADC, led by National Chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe, accused INCEC of undermining its leadership structure and threatening Nigeria’s democracy.

The party expressed concern over INEC’s decision to upload the Mark leadership on its official portal, noting that a legal proceeding is still pending and questions the legitimacy of that leadership. By doing so, the ADC says INEC has compromised its neutrality and credibility, raising significant doubts about the commission’s impartiality.

The ADC urged its members to remain calm and united, stressing that it will not allow its platform to be hijacked by “idle politicians” seeking refuge for their ambitions. It accused INEC of aligning itself with individuals who have previously destabilized their own political entities, risking the perception of bias. According to the party, these individuals have resorted to manipulative tactics to exploit the ADC for personal gain, undermining the democratic process and posing a threat to Nigeria’s stability.

The party noted that such divisions and opportunism have contributed to Nigeria’s current economic downturn, insecurity, and entrenched corruption. In response, the ADC has filed a suit at the Federal High Court against INEC and the individuals involved, seeking to overturn the recognition and restore the party’s mandate. It called on INEC to exercise maturity and restraint by awaiting the outcome of the case before making further pronouncements on party leadership.

Prioritising peace and stability within its ranks, the ADC pledged to avoid actions that could cause confusion or unrest among its members. It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its mandate and safeguarding its integrity, insisting it will not serve as a refuge for politicians seeking to exploit its platform for personal ambitions. The condemnation highlights the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral process and underscores the need for the commission to maintain neutrality and credibility. The outcome of the court case and INEC’s response will be closely watched, given their significant implications for Nigeria’s democracy and national stability.
