Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara reiterated his administration’s commitment to developing the state’s seaports, emphasizing the need for collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to stimulate economic growth and create jobs. He made the statement during a courtesy visit by NPA Chairman Senator Adedayo Adeyeye and board members in Port Harcourt, marking Governor Fubara’s first official engagement since the end of emergency rule in the state.
The governor welcomed the NPA’s call for synergy, stressing that state governments must be involved in interventions that address the genuine needs of the people. He noted that his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, had also emphasized the importance of working with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). While underscoring the significance of seaports to national growth, Governor Fubara lamented the underutilization of facilities in Rivers State and proposed a special meeting with the NPA to discuss strategies for maximizing the potential of the Port Harcourt and Onne ports.
According to the governor, functional ports will create employment opportunities, revitalize surrounding communities, and reduce urban congestion. Job creation through port activities would also help address minor security challenges by positively engaging youths.
NPA Board Chairman Senator Adeyeye thanked the governor for the audience and highlighted that Rivers State is privileged to host two major ports, vital assets to the state’s wealth. He outlined challenges facing the ports, including poor roads, inadequate sanitation, and minor security concerns, and pledged that the agency would continue its corporate‑social‑responsibility interventions in local communities while seeking closer collaboration with the state government.
Governor Fubara gave positive consideration to the NPA delegation’s requests, except for road improvements, which he said fall under federal responsibility. His commitment to developing the state’s seaports is expected to boost the economy and create jobs, addressing some of the challenges facing Rivers State. The collaboration between the Rivers State government and the NPA represents a significant step toward maximizing the ports’ potential and promoting regional economic growth.
