2027: NNPP clarifies Kwankwaso's stance on defecting to APC

The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has dismissed speculation that its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Party National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed said Kwankwaso’s recent comments were misinterpreted. In an interview on Arise Television’s “Prime Time,” Ahmed clarified that the NNPP remains open to forming coalitions with parties that share similar ideologies and objectives. He outlined three possible paths: entering a coalition, contesting alone, or considering overtures from other parties.

Ahmed emphasized that Kwankwaso’s statement in Kano was simply an explanation of one of these options. Kwankwaso indicated that, should the APC approach him, he would consider their offer provided the interests of NNPP members were protected. Ahmed stressed that this does not signify a defection, but rather a willingness to engage with the APC if concrete guarantees for NNPP members are offered.

The NNPP’s stance on coalition building is not new; the party has consistently expressed openness to collaborations with like‑minded groups. Ahmed’s clarification aims to reassure NNPP supporters and allies that the party remains committed to its core values and objectives. As Nigeria’s political landscape evolves, the NNPP’s approach to alliances and its commitment to protecting members’ interests will be closely watched. The party’s decision to keep its options open could have significant implications for the country’s political dynamics, especially ahead of future elections. With the clarification in place, attention now turns to how the NNPP will navigate the complex web of alliances and negotiations in Nigerian politics.
