President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to restart oil production in Ogoniland, located in Rivers State. This development follows his conferment of posthumous national honors on the late Ogoni four, who were awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger. The ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Tinubu urged the Ogoni people to embrace reconciliation and unity after years of division. He assured the community of his administration’s support for peace, environmental remediation, and economic revival in the region.
Tinubu noted a consensus among the Ogoni communities to welcome the resumption of oil production and pledged that his government will provide the necessary resources to help the people achieve shared prosperity. To facilitate the restart, he directed National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to engage with Ogoni communities, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and other stakeholders to finalize the modalities for restarting operations. According to the NSA’s report, consultations have been held with all four Ogoni zones and the diaspora, capturing demands for structured participation in oil production, accelerated cleanup, and sustainable development.
