US ‘preparing options’ for strikes inside Venezuela – NBC — RT World News

The United States is reportedly weighing military strikes against alleged drug traffickers in Venezuela, according to NBC. Unnamed American officials told the broadcaster that Washington is “preparing options” for strikes that could occur “in a matter of weeks,” although President Donald Trump has not yet approved the measure.

The plans follow a recent U.S. operation in which at least three boats suspected of carrying narcotics were sunk off Venezuela’s coast, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 people. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro denied any connection to drug trafficking and claimed the attacks were part of a U.S. attempt to overthrow him. U.S. officials are discussing possible drone strikes on drug laboratories and targeting members and leaders of trafficking groups, driven by frustration that earlier deployments of warships and aircraft to the Caribbean, as well as the boat attacks, have not weakened Maduro’s grip on power.

Despite the heightened tensions, the United States and Venezuela have been conducting indirect talks through Middle‑Eastern intermediaries, with Maduro allegedly offering concessions to Trump in an effort to ease the standoff. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto addressed the UN General Assembly, condemning the United States for an “illegal and completely immoral military threat,” calling for international support, and asserting that Venezuela will resist “imperialist aggression” while defending its sovereignty and right to live in peace free from foreign interference.

The reported strike plans have raised concerns about a possible escalation of the conflict, prompting close monitoring by the international community. The United States continues to use its regional military presence to pressure Maduro’s government, while Venezuela seeks support from other nations to counter U.S. actions. As the situation develops, it remains uncertain what steps both sides will take next.
