Parents raise concerns over accommodation crisis in Admiralty University

The Admiralty University of Nigeria in Delta State is confronting a student‑accommodation crisis that has alarmed parents, especially those from outside the state. The surge in student enrollment has outpaced the university’s infrastructural capacity, leading to a shortage of on‑campus housing and raising security concerns about the surrounding environment.

On September 23, 2025, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Makut Alfred Mashat, announced that hostel accommodation for the 2025/2026 academic session would be limited. Priority will be given to newly admitted students and those in their final year, while students in other levels are urged to secure alternative lodging. The university cited the growing student population and insufficient facilities as the reasons for this policy.

Parents have been advised to seek private accommodation in nearby towns such as Ibusa or Ogwashi‑Uku, which will entail additional transport costs. This recommendation has sparked worries about possible exploitation by landlords and heightened security risks associated with off‑campus housing. One parent from Anambra expressed feeling “shut out” and voiced concerns for their child’s safety, urging university management to resolve the crisis.

The situation may worsen because a polytechnic in Ogwashi‑Uku is also experiencing accommodation shortages. In response, university officials pointed to the presence of a military post, a mobile barrack, a correctional centre, and police stations in and around the campus, asserting that these facilities will ensure adequate security for students. Nevertheless, parents remain uneasy, and the accommodation issue is expected to remain a prominent concern in the weeks ahead.
