A senior aide to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has downplayed the significance of a new opposition coalition, describing its leaders as “expired politicians” with little real influence. Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, made these remarks during a media chat with journalists at the NUJ Press Centre in Kano. He said President Tinubu remains unfazed by the coalition or any prospective political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that the president’s focus is on nation‑building and implementing necessary policies rather than engaging in what he called “cheap politics.”
Abdulaziz highlighted the administration’s priorities, citing subsidy reforms, a student‑loan scheme, and major infrastructure projects. He characterized the coalition’s leaders as “bitter individuals” more concerned with their own exclusion from power than with the welfare of the Nigerian people, a perception he believes contributes to the coalition’s lack of popular support.
Addressing accusations that Tinubu’s government favors the South with development projects, Abdulaziz pointed to several large‑scale initiatives in the North, including the Ajaokuta‑Kaduna‑Kano gas pipeline, the Abuja‑Kaduna‑Kano highway, and the Kano‑Katsina‑Maradi rail line. He argued that continued funding for these projects demonstrates the president’s commitment to regional development. New projects such as the Sokoto‑Badagry highway further reflect the administration’s effort to promote growth across the entire country.
By emphasizing the breadth of its development initiatives, the Tinubu administration seeks to show its dedication to the welfare and progress of all Nigerians, irrespective of regional affiliations. As the political landscape evolves ahead of the 2027 elections, both the effectiveness of President Tinubu’s policies and the viability of opposition coalitions will be closely watched by Nigerians and international observers. The government’s ability to deliver on its development promises and address regional concerns is likely to play a decisive role in shaping the nation’s political future.
