Ebola transmission declines in Congo’s Kasai region

The Democratic Republic of Congo is witnessing a decline in its current Ebola outbreak, according to health officials in Kasai Province. The World Health Organization reports 64 confirmed and probable infections since the outbreak began, resulting in 42 deaths—a fatality rate of approximately 66 percent. Over the past week, seven new cases and seven deaths were recorded across three health areas, but experts note that transmission is slowing due to enhanced surveillance, effective case management, and improved infection‑control measures.

The outbreak remains localized, affecting six of the 21 health zones in Bulape. Five health workers have been infected, three of whom have died. Vaccination campaigns are underway, with more than 4,100 people immunized and thousands of doses held in reserve. Despite this progress, authorities caution that family clusters and delayed isolation still pose significant risks to containment.

International and local health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The World Health Organization and Congolese officials are working together to strengthen response efforts and prevent further spread. Maintaining vigilance, ensuring effective measures, and sustaining vaccination and surveillance initiatives are essential to protect vulnerable communities. The international community’s support offers hope that the recent decline can be sustained and that the disease will eventually be brought under control.
