The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Rivers State Branch, has removed its Chairman, Golden Ekprikpo Spiff, from office following allegations of gross misconduct. The branch initially suspended Spiff, and the National Working Committee (NWC) upheld the decision in a letter dated June 25 2025. The removal was formally confirmed at the union’s congress in September 2025.
In a letter signed by Acting President Marwan Mustapha Adamu, the state Vice Chairman, Princess Fyne Backo, was directed to assume the chairmanship in an acting capacity while an investigative panel, appointed by the National President, examines the allegations. Former State Chairman Anthony Nwachukwu confirmed that Spiff failed to appear before the panel. Nwachukwu, who also serves on the State Working Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said the congress unanimously voted for Spiff’s removal.
Since Vice Chairman Backo took over as Acting Chairman, several union issues have been addressed and progress made in a short period. Workers, who had been facing difficulties such as unpaid salaries, have seen swift action; the acting chairman ensured the payment of pending August salaries and is working to resolve long‑neglected welfare concerns.
The removal of the former chairman and the appointment of the acting chairman represent significant developments for JUSUN, which is now focused on tackling the challenges facing its members. The investigative panel will complete its inquiry into the allegations against Spiff and submit a report. The union’s congress has ratified the acting chairman’s position for the remainder of the tenure, signaling a new direction for the organization.
