Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has intensified efforts to preserve the peace recently restored in the state after more than two years of political tension. Following a directive for commissioners affected by the Supreme Court judgment on the Rivers political crisis to step aside, eight other commissioners who were not subject to the ruling have resumed their official duties.
On Saturday night, Governor Fubara met with his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and a larger group of political leaders loyal to the FCT Minister. The closed‑door meeting, held at the Port Harcourt residence of Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, continued into the early hours of Sunday. Although the specifics of the discussion were not disclosed, it is believed that both leaders are cooperating to uphold the peace accord reached during the six‑month emergency rule imposed under President Bola Tinubu.
The gathering was attended by several prominent politicians, including the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, and Senators Barinada Mpigi, Magnus Abe, and George Sekibo. Other attendees comprised former ministers, lawmakers, and party leaders such as Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, HRM Sergeant Awuse, and PDP State Chairman Chukwuemeka Aaron.
Minister Wike reiterated his commitment to the peace process, emphasizing that he has no intention of influencing the selection of new commissioners. Governor Fubara’s renewed engagement with Wike and his supporters follows his recent visit to President Tinubu, where he reaffirmed his dedication to maintaining peace and sought counsel on preventing a relapse into political crisis.
The collaboration between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike is viewed as a crucial step toward sustaining stability and promoting development in Rivers State, a key oil‑producing region with a history of political tension. As the state moves forward, the peace accord is expected to remain a central focus of the government, with ongoing efforts to address the underlying issues that sparked the political crisis.
