Nigerian musician Abolore Adegbola Akande, known professionally as 9ice, has announced plans to receive a tribal mark when he turns 50. In a recent TikTok video, the 45‑year‑old singer explained that the mark will honor his father, who bears the same traditional symbol. Born in Ogbomosho, 9ice said the tribal mark is a personal goal he intends to achieve on his 50th birthday. Although some friends have expressed skepticism, he remains determined to go through with it.
9ice is celebrated for his distinctive use of the Yoruba language, his unique delivery style, and proverbial lyrics. He gained widespread recognition with the 2008 hit “Gongo Aso” and has since released several successful albums and singles. In an August 2025 interview with Nancy Isime, he disclosed that he is now a traditional worshiper, having converted after seeking help from an Ifa priest during a spiritual crisis. He recounted experiencing a “spiritual attack” that caused him to vomit blood for six months, but he was healed after visiting the priest. The singer expressed regret for not embracing traditional worship earlier in life.
His decision to get a tribal mark at 50 reflects a deepening connection to his cultural heritage. As a prominent figure in Nigerian music, 9ice’s actions and beliefs are likely to generate interest and discussion among fans and the wider public. With his 50th birthday still a few years away, it remains to be seen whether he will follow through on his plans, but his commitment to his cultural roots is evident.
