President Donald Trump announced plans to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods, effective November 1 or sooner. This new duty will be added to the existing 30% tariffs, representing a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the United States and China. The United States imports a large volume of products from China, including electronics, apparel and furniture, and the announcement was made via a post on Truth Social.

In addition to the tariff increase, the United States will implement export controls on critical software beginning November 1. The move is presented as a response to China’s decision to tighten export controls on rare earths, essential components for many electronic devices. These actions have raised concerns about potential disruptions to global supply chains and the broader trade relationship between the two nations.

The heightened tensions have also affected diplomatic engagements. A meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled for later this month in South Korea, appears to have been cancelled. Investors have expressed worry that the situation could repeat earlier trade frictions that saw tariffs on Chinese goods rise to 145% earlier this year.

The U.S.–China trade dispute has been ongoing for several months, with both sides imposing tariffs on each other’s products. Recent U.S. efforts to renegotiate trade agreements with China have focused on intellectual property rights and trade imbalances, but the latest announcement suggests those talks have stalled. As the two largest economies in the world, any further escalation is likely to have far‑reaching consequences for global trade and the economy. The impact of the new tariffs will be closely monitored in the coming weeks.
