'Regrettable' - FG reacts to death of Arise TV's Somtochukwu Maduagwu

The Nigeria Police have updated the public on the investigation into the death of Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu, a presenter for Arise Television, who was killed during an armed robbery at her home in Abuja. On 29 September, armed robbers broke into Somtochukwu’s apartment at Unique Apartments, Katampe Extension, Mabushi, Abuja, killing both the journalist and a security guard, Mr Barnabas Danlami.

Following a thorough investigation, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command arrested 12 suspects linked to the robbery. Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin said the suspects were identified through diligent efforts and extensive digital‑intelligence analysis. Investigators determined that the fatal shot that killed the security guard was fired by one of the suspects, Shamsudeen Hassan, who confessed he shot the guard when the latter tried to stop the robbers from entering the apartment.

Further inquiry revealed that the firearms used by the suspects were sourced from a supplier in the Niger Republic, whose identity remains undisclosed. The arrested individuals also admitted to participating in other armed‑robbery operations across Abuja, including in Katampe I, Apo and Zuba. The police have pledged to prosecute the suspects in accordance with the law.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about armed robbery and violent crime in Nigeria’s capital. Police have reassured the public that they are working to address these issues and bring the perpetrators to justice. The investigation into the deaths of Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu and the security guard represents a significant step toward that goal, and authorities will continue to ensure the suspects are held accountable and justice is served.
