Family drags singer, Uche Ibeto, to court over late mum's cash, valuables, property documents

The Administrator of the estate of the late Mrs. Esther Ibeto has approached the Lagos State High Court for redress against Jigida singer Uche Ibeto, alleging unlawful possession of the deceased’s property. The lawsuit, filed through counsel Barrister E. Omoijiade on 2 October 2025, claims that Uche has taken cash, valuables, title documents and rental income belonging to the estate without authorization.

Uche Ibeto, known for her 1980s hit album “Jigida dance,” is also accused of sponsoring defamatory publications against family members, including a piece dated 9 September 2025. The family alleges that she has diverted rental income exceeding N25 million for personal use despite repeated requests for an accounting of the funds.

The Administrator, Mrs. Laura Chinyelu Okoh, seeks a court order requiring Uche to return all estate assets, provide a full financial account, and publish a retraction and apology for the defamatory statements. The claim also includes monetary compensation of N10 million for defamation and another N10 million for legal costs. Additionally, the Administrator requests an order for Uche to account for £10,000 allegedly withdrawn from the deceased’s Barclays Bank account and a perpetual injunction restraining her from further interference with the estate or publication of defamatory material.

The claimant asserts that the defendant’s actions have damaged her reputation and brought the administration of the estate into disrepute. The lawsuit follows allegations that Uche rented out portions of the deceased’s property without lawful authority and failed to account for the rental income. To protect the interests of all beneficiaries, the Administrator has asked the court to order the sale of the house at No. 36 Ibezim Obiojulu Street, Surulere, Lagos.

As of the filing, Uche has refused service of the court papers at her residence. The case remains pending with no hearing date set. The outcome will determine the fate of the estate’s assets and resolve the disputes between the parties, underscoring the importance of proper estate administration and adherence to inheritance and property laws.
