Shell and its partner, Sunlink Energies and Resources Limited, have made a final investment decision on the HI gas project offshore Nigeria. The project, discovered in 1985, is located in 100 m of water about 50 km from shore and is expected to begin production before the end of the decade. At peak output, it will supply 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to Nigeria LNG (NLNG), helping expand the Bonny Island terminal’s capacity and supporting Nigeria’s ambition to become a larger player in the global LNG market.
The HI field’s estimated recoverable resources total approximately 285 million barrels of oil equivalent. The development will consist of a wellhead platform with four wells, a pipeline to transport multiphase gas to the onshore Bonny processing plant, and the processing facility itself. The project is part of a joint venture in which Sunlink Energies and Resources Limited holds 60 % and SNEPCo—a Shell plc subsidiary—holds 40 %. Production from the project will be reported through Shell’s Upstream segment. The peak production and resource estimates are presented as 100 % total gross figures, with a 50 % probability of being lower and a 50 % probability of being higher.
This investment aligns with Shell’s broader strategy to bring upstream and integrated gas projects online between 2025 and 2030, targeting a combined peak production of more than 1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. It also supports Shell’s goal of growing top‑line production across its Upstream and Integrated Gas businesses by 1 % annually through 2030. LNG, which emits less greenhouse gas than coal for power generation and less than petrol or diesel for transport, plays a key role in the energy transition.
The final investment decision on the HI gas project underscores Shell’s continued commitment to Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly in deepwater and integrated gas. It follows a recent final investment decision on the Bonga North project and an increased stake in the Bonga field, reflecting Shell’s disciplined investment approach in Nigeria. The HI project is expected to boost NLNG’s contribution to Nigeria’s national economic development goals, creating jobs in both construction and operations.
